AI in Astronomy
About
There is a natural disassociation between Astronomers and Computer Scientists, creating a gap in Machine Learning technology where Astronomers are lagging a few years behind. Seeing this problem, professor Laerte Sodré Jr created a study group in 2019 to improve student’s knowledge about Deep Learning. The group was composed of undergraduate, MsC and PhD students, all of which were either working with or were interested in Machine Learning as a powerful tool. Since most of us had no contact with AI before, we’ve started our activities by reading François Chollet’s book Deep Learning with Python, and you can still check out our classes from 2020 here: https://iagml.github.io/. Once the reading was completed, we pivoted the group into the seminar style we’re currently using.
Our goal is to connect state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence studies to astronomers from all around the world.
In the last few years Science has been entering it’s 4th paradigm: the Data Driven Science. Astronomy has been no different, and it’s becoming harder and harder to analyze data using traditional methods. At the present time the best statistical methods to study these huge amounts of information are all based on Machine Learning. It is important for astronomers not only to be familiar with these tools, but to learn to use it themselves. Join us every other Friday to see the current development of Artificial Intelligence in the context of Astronomy!
